poetry

On Thursday in class, we talked about poetry and the best ways to read it. I have never been good at reading poetry. I always thought that it was way to complicated to understand. To me, if you are trying to say something, why don’t you just come right out and say it. I think that it is very dumb and pointless to try and make your writing sounds as difficult as they possibly can so that the reader has to sit there and try and figure out what they are trying to say for an hour for 5 lines worth of writing. Half the time the reader doesn’t even get the meaning correct. It frustrates me too much to read poetry for fun. I try and stay as far away from it as I can. It just works out better for me that way. The whole poem about onions seems like a waste of paper to me. But because I had to read it for class, and I had to take the time to try and figure out what it was trying to say, it was cool to get to the point where I did actually understand it. If you read it a couple of times and actually take it line by line and try and understand slowly it becomes easier to read and understand. Someone in the class said that it is good to get in a poetry state of mind before you actually read it. I thought that was good especially for me because I definitely have to be patient when I have to read poetry because it frustrates me that much. But it was good to be able to discuss it in class and it helped me fully understand more.

  1. I think a lot of people don't like poetry simply because they don't understand it.

So I'm glad for you for this: that "it was cool to get to the point where I did actually understand it."
